In the fast-paced world we inhabit, it's easy to get swept away by the demands of everyday life, leading us to neglect the self-care needs we all have. Depression and anxiety can also profoundly impact an individual's ability to engage in self-care practices, creating formidable barriers that hinder even the simplest acts.
Self-care is often neglected as we are too busy caring for the needs of others, we lack the energy or motivation to care for ourselves, or simply don’t see our needs as a priority. Yet, amidst the chaos and the self-doubt, prioritizing self-care is the very thing that can provide us with the energy needed to show up for others and prevent burnout, which is inevitable when consistently neglecting our needs.
Now, you are probably thinking, “Kristen, I don’t know when I would have time to add a self-care practice into my already jam-packed day” or “If I don’t have any energy, how can I even get started?” Helping you to figure this out is precisely why I am writing this!
I know how hard it can be to add something new to a routine and the stress that can come from that. It is my hope that with this entry, I can help you brainstorm the creation of a self-care routine that is an easy addition to your day-to-day life and may even help you to clear your plate of unnecessary responsibilities you may be picking up.
My hope is to empower you to cultivate a sustainable self-care regimen that not only enhances your well-being but also fosters a sense of balance and fulfillment in your life!
What Exactly is Self-Care

While the answer to this seems obvious, I have quite often found that people tend to overthink it. We tend to go for the most complex solutions as we want one big fix, when in reality, it is several smaller, bite sized pieces, working together over time that provide us with the relief we are looking for from self-care.
We also tend to label self-care as optional or selfish, something that gets in the way of work, chores, or family time, when in fact it is a NEED! Self-care provides us with the nourishment needed to continue to show up without feeling exhausted, defeated, or resentful.
At its core, self-care embodies the art of nurturing your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It's about recognizing your inherent worth and carving out moments of respite to replenish your spirit. Self-care is not indulgence; it's a profound act of self-respect and compassion. Self-care is an act you are worthy of!
The Transformative Power of Self-Care
Enhanced Resilience: By tending to your needs, you cultivate emotional resilience, fortifying yourself against life's inevitable challenges.
Stress Reduction: Engaging in self-care rituals helps alleviate stress, fostering a sense of calm and balance amidst the chaos.
Improved Mental Health: Self-care practices nurture mental clarity, boost self-esteem, and foster a deeper connection with yourself. It helps you to slow down enough to recognize and accept your thoughts and emotions.
Greater Life Satisfaction: Prioritizing self-care cultivates a sense of fulfillment, helping you to savor life's simple pleasures and cherish meaningful moments.
Enhanced Relationships: When you prioritize your well-being, you're better equipped to nurture healthy relationships with others.
Types of Self-Care
Physical Self-Care: This involves taking deliberate action to attend to your body's physical needs, health, and well-being. Examples include, nourishing your body with nutritious meals, engaging in regular exercise, prioritizing rest/sleep, taking care of hygiene, avoidance of harmful substances, building body awareness, and attending to medical needs.
Emotional Self-Care: This entails practicing activities that support your emotional well-being. Examples include, self-compassion, self-reflection, journaling, seeking therapy or counseling, mindful emotional expression, practicing gratitude, and engaging in activities that ignite joy and fulfillment.
Social Self-Care: This involves activities and practices that promote a sense of belonging, foster supportive relationships, and contribute to overall well-being. Examples include, nurturing and maintaining healthy relationships, setting boundaries in social interactions, cultivating meaningful connections with others, spending quality time with loved ones, and nurturing supportive relationships.
Spiritual Self-Care: This involves activities and practices that nourish your spirit (the core of your being), foster a deeper understanding of yourself and the world around you, and provide a sense of connection to something greater than yourself. Examples include, engaging in mindfulness practices, meditation, spending time in nature, exploring beliefs and values, practicing gratitude and compassion, seeking inspiration and wisdom, attending religious and/or spiritual ceremonies, and honoring your intuition.
Incorporating Self-Care Into Your Daily Routine

While the idea of adding yet another task to your already busy schedule may seem daunting, integrating self-care into your daily routine doesn't have to be complicated. Here are some simple yet effective strategies:
Start Small: Begin by identifying one or two self-care practices that resonate with you and commit to incorporating them into your routine. Once, those are a part of your routine, explore what else you may be able to add.
Schedule It: Treat self-care as non-negotiable appointments in your calendar. Block out time for self-care activities just as you would for any other important task.
Practice Mindfulness: Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations throughout the day. Take moments to pause, breathe, and check in with yourself.
Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to activities or commitments that drain your energy or compromise your well-being.
Be Kind to Yourself: Embrace self-compassion and allow yourself grace on days when self-care feels challenging. Remember, it's not about perfection but rather consistency and intention.
Alternative Self-Care Practices to Consider
While popular self-care activities abound, here are some impactful practices that are easy to accomplish that not many people think of:
Digital Detox: Unplug from technology and its constant stream of information. Choose to engage in activities such as reading a book, journaling, or enjoying a leisurely stroll.
Laughter: Watch a funny movie or stand-up comedy, read a joke book, recall a funny memory with a friend, or simply look at yourself to laugh until it becomes genuine. Laughter releases endorphins, natural mood lifters, and will help alleviate feelings of tension and stress.
Child-Like Play: Have a dance party (solo or with family/friends), get on a swing set, play hop scotch, jump on a trampoline, shoot basketball, or play catch with a friend. Take time to engage in exercise that is fun and will help nourish your inner child.
Art Therapy: Whether you are pulling out your paint brushes and a canvas, using crayons and a coloring book, or drawing with sidewalk chalk engaging in artistic activities can help reduce anxiety, increase focus, and build creativity.
Singing: Put on your favorite songs and sing at the top of your lungs to release endorphins, boost mood, and help regulate your breathing patterns.
Build with Legos: The building blocks aren’t just for kids! Building with Legos helps to promote creativity and expression, mindfulness and focus, problem-solving skills, and healthy sensory stimulation. Completing your build can also provide you with a sense of accomplishment!
Mood Based Playlist: Create several playlists that correspond with different moods/emotions you experience, putting the songs in a certain order. For example, if you are feeling sad, make a playlist that includes 7-10 songs, starting the list with the saddest song, followed by a song that is still sad, but a little less sad than the first, followed by a song that is still sad, but a little less sad than the second, and so on until you end the playlist with a happy song. This can help you to feel and expression your emotions, while helping to create a natural and progressive boost in your mood. Perfect for the car ride home!
Noticing your Five Senses: Take a break from what you are working on and notice your surroundings, making note of everything you can see, feel, hear, smell, and taste. This can help ground you in the present moment should you start to feel anxious or overwhelmed.
Embrace and Express Uncomfortable Emotions: Emotions can’t be categorized into good and bad as they are neither good nor bad. All emotions are essential and necessary, even the ones we prefer not to feel. Just like physical pain, we have emotional pain because our body is trying to express a need we need to address. Take time to listen to what your emotions are trying to tell you, cry, scream into a pillow, jump up and down, and just let it out when the need arises. I promise, you will, at the least, feel some relief though expressing what has been bottled up.
Blow Bubbles: Get out that bubble wand and see how many bubbles you can create with one blow or see if you can create a bubble that is bigger than your head. The practice of blowing bubbles can be fun and pleasurable as well as help regulate our breathing, which can help to sooth and relax us.
